For this penitential season, the Church draws on the wisdom of the Scriptures and tradition in suggesting a time of intense prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Catholics in the United States are obliged to abstain on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during the season of Lent. Catholics are also obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Self-imposed observance fasting on all weekdays in Lent is strongly recommended, as is abstinence from meat on all Fridays of the year.
Fasting - On a day of fasting, one meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs but together they should not equal the other full meal. Eating between meals is no permitted. The obligation of fasting binds Catholics who are 18-59 years old. The law does not oblige when health or ability to work would be seriously affected.
Abstinence - On a day of abstinence eating of meat is not allowed. The obligation of abstinence applies to those 14 years and older. The law does not oblige when health or ability to work would be seriously affected.
Making a new start of Lent - Lent has traditionally been a time of self-denial, self-discipline and for giving something up. While there are benefits in learning self-control, etc., in this type of sacrifice there is much to be gained by doing something positive for Lent. Hopefully, the new practice will become a good habit or virtue that will continue on. There are many good works which can be recommended, everything from daily Mass to visiting the sick. Service done for another person is obviously a good choice.

Consider enriching your Lenten journey with:
The Best Lent Ever with Matthew Kelly at DynamicCatholic.com with daily short reflection videos.
Join our Bible Study group in using Dr. Edward Sri's videos and discussion guide eon No Greater Love - an extended detailed reflection on Christ's Passion.
Transformed developed by Pastor Rick Warren consists of videos (on YouTube) and his journal/reflection book on reflecting one's spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, relational and financial/vocational health.
We chose
Transformed for two reasons:
We know that God's grace builds on what we bring. In very specific ways this prayer and discussion series provides a "tune-up" in these areas in order to bring healing, wholeness and holiness to participants.
This process will prepare all who participate to engage later in the year with The Journey - a prayer/dialogue series from Paulist Press. Ding so will enable us to enter more fully into the Archdiocesan Pastoral planning process of growing as disciples.
